NRC approves changes
STATEWIDE — The Natural Resources Commission has approved several proposed changes to the Wildlife Conservation Order.
• An amendment regarding mute swan management will provide the Michigan Depart-ment of Natural Resources control over populations.
• The 2006 black bear license quotas were set at the same numbers as 2005. Hunters should know that 90 licenses in the Berland unit and 50 in the Carney unit will be cut.
• The 2006 fall wild turkey season dates and quotas were accepted. Nearly 56,450 licenses will be available. The season will run Oct. 2-Nov. 14. A total of 14 units encompassing 31,935 square miles will be open for hunting.
• A survey of support for mandatory Quality Deer Management regulations in four Upper Peninsula DMUs showed DMU 122 has sufficient support to continue using mandatory antler point restrictions. DMUs 152, 155 and 252 had insufficient support, so the restriction will be dropped.
• The NRC has regained authority to close or open each DMU in the state to antlerless licenses. The NRC moved the 2006 antlerless license application period to July 15-Aug. 15.
